Cities: Skylines 2 – How to Build Roundabouts
[ad_1]
Roundabouts can be incredibly helpful when it comes to traffic management, both in real life and in Cities: Skylines 2. Unlike signs or stoplights, vehicles from every intersecting street can keep moving when they reach a roundabout, and so on average the wait times are lower.
Cities: Skylines 2 makes it easier to create roundabouts by including a special new feature in the roads tab that players can drop onto any existing road intersection. This makes it much easier to adjust traffic patterns without having to clear out the existing road and replace it. However, players can also use the old method of building roundabouts if they need a larger intersection.
When players start a regular game, they should have access to the roundabouts tab under road construction. Only the smallest roundabout is available, but this is enough for intersections between small and medium roads.
Select the roundabout and then move it over an intersection to place it. The roads of the intersection should spread out to go around the roundabout median, and players should see the intersection silhouettes become circular.
Cities: Skylines 2 has three more roundabout sizes that players must unlock using development points. Only one point unlocks all three, so players can buy them early. Larger roundabouts are more suitable for busy intersections involving larger roads, since they force drivers to slow down and allow other vehicles to enter the roundabout.
One downside of roundabouts is that they use up a lot of room. Any building that sits next to a straight intersection will overlap a roundabout, and larger roundabouts will take up even more space. This isn’t a big problem for zone buildings, but players will need to relocate civic buildings next to intersections before they can add a roundabout. Roundabouts also have no zoning squares, but players should avoid zoning next to intersections in general.
Manually Designed Roundabouts
Players can also design their own roundabouts using the same methods that worked in the original game. First, players must create a circular road using the curved road tool. This road should be one-way, but players can use any road size from a small two-lane to a wide highway.
Next, players must unlock Advanced Road Services. This also costs one development point, and players should definitely unlock it early since it also leads to large roads and highway construction. Advanced Road Services includes the ability to change intersection signals, which default to stoplights on medium and large roads.
Select stoplights in the Advanced Road Services tab and hover over each of the roundabout’s intersections. Hit the cancel button to remove the stoplights, which on PC is the right mouse button. The stoplights will disappear, and players should see “Yield” signs appear on all the roads feeding into the roundabout.
Zone squares will surround the roundabout, but much like the smaller ones players should avoid zoning squares adjacent to roundabouts. Players should also replace the normal parking spaces with grass, trees, or extra-wide sidewalks to prevent drivers from parking on the roundabout.
The best place for manually created roundabouts is at highway intersections where traffic is guaranteed to build up. The extra size gives vehicles more space to fill as they wait to enter or exit the intersection.
Cities: Skylines 2 is available now on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
