Starfield Trick Makes Flying in Space Better

Highlights

  • Piloting large ships in third-person view can be challenging due to the awkward camera mechanics in Starfield.
  • A fan has discovered a bug that allows players to zoom out the camera during space flight by using the photo mode in Starfield.
  • Many fans have requested Bethesda to adjust the third-person flight camera to better accommodate larger ships. However, time will tell if an update for the feature is added to the game.

Piloting spacecraft in Starfield can take some getting used to at first, but one fan of the game accidentally stumbles upon a way to greatly improve the third-person flight camera by exploiting a minor bug to zoom further out. The ship building mechanics present in Starfield allow players to create an almost limitless variety of unique craft of varying configurations and sizes, but not every ship is easy to pilot.

The ability for players to explore the galaxy in their own custom ships within Starfield is often considered to be one of the game’s most appealing features. Players with enough cash can put together virtually any type of spacecraft from cargo freighters to battleships, and many fans have even shown off some truly unusual ship designs of their own in Starfield. With both the internal habitat modules as well as the exterior hull plating fully customizable on practically every ship, fans have even been able to accurately replicate some popular ships from other big space sci-fi franchises.

While flying a big ship capable of packing heavy weapons in addition to massive amounts of cargo might seem like a great way to play the game at first glance, large ships often aren’t easy to pilot in third-person view due to the awkward camera. Thankfully though, one fan has discovered an unintentional way around this problem thanks to an exploit involving Starfield‘s photo mode. As demonstrated in a post on Reddit from the user Free_Radical_CEO, going into photo mode and reducing the field of view setting to the lowest value before exiting photo mode will cause the camera to zoom out substantially while piloting a ship in third-person view.

Many fans of Starfield have already begun taking advantage of this bug to improve their own shots in the game’s photo mode. While there are many small tweaks and additions that Starfield fans have suggested being added to the game, a particularly popular request is for Bethesda to adjust the third-person flight camera to more comfortably accommodate larger ships.

Bethesda has already expressed an interest in bringing certain additions to Starfield in future updates, with some notable examples being HDR, adjustable field-of-view settings, and an “eat” button that would allow players to consume food items in the world without picking them up. Starfield‘s latest update doesn’t bring too many new features to the table, though it does focus on improving stability and fixing popular bugs.

Starfield is available on PC and Xbox Series X/S.
