- While there is no concrete information about EA’s plans for the Incursion trademark, it is possible that EA is considering the return of a mode similar to Battlefield 1’s Incursions mode in future seasons of Battlefield 2042 or a new Battlefield game. A recent trademark filing may indicate that EA plans to bring the popular Incursions game mode either to Battlefield 2042 or a future game. The team-based multiplayer mode was introduced in Battlefield 1 but was absent from Battlefield 5 and Battlefield 2042.
EA and DICE released the latest Battlefield game, Battlefield 2042, in November 2021 to an underwhelming response, with Metacritic scores in the 64-68 range. Still, the game is far from dead, with DICE continuing to roll out new content that has significantly improved Battlefield 2042. Season 6: Dark Creations launched October 10, introducing the new “Redacted” map and adding horror-themed content to the game’s sci-fi setting.
On September 22, 2023, Electronic Arts filed a trademark for the word “Incursion.” EA hasn’t issued a statement regarding the trademark, and there is no current information on the publisher’s plans for it. Electronic Arts may have greenlit a new game called Incursion, and the name may have no connection to Battlefield whatsoever. However, the name is very similar to the “Incursions” game mode from Battlefield 1. Given the popular reception of the World War One game’s five versus five multiplayer mode, EA may be preparing to bring it back in some form.
Battlefield 1‘s Incursions mode evolved out of the Competitive Match mode from Battlefield: Hardline‘s Gateway expansion. Incursions pit two five-player teams against each other in a series of small-scale battles. The standard version of Incursions saw the team competing to control three flags. Teams won by collecting the most Tickets by holding flags, killing enemies, and destroying enemy vehicles. Battlefield 1‘s Sinai Desert and Amiens maps also had unique versions of Incursions called King of the Hill and Squad Breakthrough, which differed significantly but maintained many of the same core features.
Of course, there is currently no way of knowing what the new Incursion mode will look like. However, it’s possible that something resembling the Battlefield 1 mode might return in future seasons of Battlefield 2042 or even an unannounced new Battlefield game. However, that’s assuming EA’s trademark refers to a game mode at all, which is an assumption given the lack of information.
For now, it is far too soon to do more than wildly speculate as to what EA has in mind for the still-pending “Incursion” trademark. However, the name’s similarity to the Battlefield 1 game mode seems too big to be a coincidence. If nothing else, Incursions fans have a reason to keep an eye on Electronic Arts.
Battlefield 2042 is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S.
