Activision has shared a look at many of the classic maps coming to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 later this year. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is bringing back 16 iconic Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 maps, rebuilding them from the ground up yet remaining authentic to the 2009 shooter’s design. Now Call of Duty fans can judge for themselves whether Sledgehammer Games has remade Terminal, Afghan, Favela, and Estate up to the quality expectations fans have.
It was a shocking announcement that Sledgehammer Games would be bringing all of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2‘s maps to its newest game. It’s not strange for new Call of Duty releases to bring back older maps, but to remaster all 16 classic maps for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 was a surprise. As surprising as it may have been, the news was still warmly received. Modern Warfare 2‘s maps are beloved, perhaps more than any other Call of Duty release.
In the latest Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Intel Drop video, Sledgehammer Games offered some insight into its decision to bring back Modern Warfare 2‘s classic maps. Sledgehammer developers about how excited the team was when the decision to remake these maps was made. There’s mention of the potential for enhanced Call of Duty gameplay if only through improvements to technology and fidelity. Mostly, Sledgehammer just talks about how exciting it is to bring these maps back.
The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Intel Drop video, along with an accompanying blog post, offers the best look at these new maps that players have had yet. Afghan, Derail, Estate, Favela, Karachi, Highrise, Invasion, Quarry, Rundown, Rust, Scrapyard, Skidrow, Sub Base, Terminal, Underpass, and Wasteland are the confirmed maps for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, and new footage or screenshots for most of them has been shared. It’s not quite as exciting as actually playing the maps, but it’s the next best thing.
A big part of what makes the upcoming release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 so highly anticipated is the return of these maps. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2‘s release in 2009 can be looked at as one of the franchise’s biggest moments. These maps stand out as one of the reasons why. Sledgehammer Games and Activision wouldn’t be bringing all of these Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 maps back just for nostalgia, though. They’re doing it because these are good maps. The betas for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 start in October, so fans won’t have to wait long to try the new maps for themselves.
