Front Mission 2 was originally released in 1997 on the PS1 but in Japan only. The first game in the series to get a Western release was Front Mission 3, also on the PS1, in 2000. It took five years for the series to reach the West after the original debuted in 1995 on the SNES.

So, despite Front Mission 2 being almost three decades old, an official release in English is a big deal. The story follows a group of marines, led by Ash, whose base was attacked by rebels. Players must traverse through countless battlefields, fighting mechs in a tactical RPG fashion. Let’s give out some tips on how to upgrade these mechs to make the game less stressful.

8 Equipment To Remove

First things first, players need to jump into the setup menu once they acquire Thomas and his troop. The simplest strategy to implement in Front Mission 2 is conformity meaning that all mech units should virtually be the same. For example, Thomas comes equipped with a HardRod which is a melee weapon. It hits hard but it can only strike once thus meaning the success rate is low. Melee weapons, one-shot guns like rifles, and shoulder shields should be removed to decrease weight.

The idea of creating a melee-based robot army is pretty cool and Square Enix should make a brawler spinoff of this series with that concept in mind. However, as previously stated the inability to hit more than once with most melee weapons makes them a real coin toss. The two handheld weapons players should focus on instead are shotguns and machine guns because they both have a good area of effect. The first machine gun that will become available is called the Juri EX while the first purchasable shotgun is called the Higa T9SG. Units should either hold one of each or equip two of the same weapon.

6 Equip Your Pilots With Skills

Buying different weapons and body parts for your mechs is the quickest way to increase their strength in Front Mission 2. There are more classic RPG elements though as the pilots can gain skills upon leveling up.

For example, one early skill is called Feint which will increase the possibility of skills chaining together. A skill chain could include a critical hit followed by a deadly blow to the legs. In the mech setup menu, don’t forget to equip skills for the pilot.

5 Get A Backpack

There are items in the game that can heal mech parts in battle. Repair-1, for example, will heal HP on an arm while Restore-1 will bring back a part from disrepair. It’s basically like a Phoenix Down from Final Fantasy if it only revived part of a character’s body. Unlike most RPGs, players cannot select from an item menu whenever they want. Restorative items must instead be equipped and units can only do this if they have a backpack on. The first backpack players can buy is called the BP-T3A and it will only allow one item to be stored in it for the next battle.

4 Get Shoulder Rockets

The aforementioned shoulder shields should be replaced by shoulder rocket launchers. The first one players can buy is called the Plover M2. Like most melee weapons, early rocket launchers can only hit one part of the body so accuracy is not guaranteed. However, low accuracy is okay in this instance because rockets will not be the main weapon for mechs. Rockets should be used when players are far enough away from the enemy’s close-range vicinity. It’s good to be able to attack in all possible situations even if the hit is not guaranteed. Also, it should be said that only one shoulder rocket launcher is needed per mech unit.

3 First Part Replacements

Eventually, players will get to a shop in Daukandei where they can buy new bodies, arms, legs, and so much more. Every unit should equip themselves with the Zora C5 parts for all forms of their body in Front Mission 2.

They offer a nice boost to HP while not adding too many detriments like lower defenses and higher weight. Plus a Zara C5 unit will look aesthetically pleasing to the eye. That’s not a huge concern as this is a top-down tactical RPG wherein units are small, but it’s still a nice bonus on top of the decent stats.

2 Upgrading Your Computer

There are four aspects to every mech unit that coincide with the aforementioned skills. They are Fight, Short, Long, and Skill. Using short-range weapons like shotguns will level up Short, which will lead to new skills. Besides leveling up these four quadrants by defeating enemies, computer programs can be replaced in the mechs. Clio-1 is a good program to buy once it becomes available as it will increase a mech’s fighting capabilities and short-range actions. The short-range specs are of course the most important for the type of build this guide is constructing in Front Mission 2.

1 Hurting For Money?

This last tip vaguely ties into upgrading mechs in the game but it is something all players should keep in mind. Besides a good parts shop, Daukandei is home to the first colosseum in the game which is a staple of the series let alone RPGs from the 80s and 90s. Besides main missions, the colosseum is the best way for players to earn money which is needed to buy parts, weapons, and items. EXP unfortunately will not be earned in colosseum bouts although personal experience should be accounted for too. Players can test out new strategies in the colosseum to see what does and doesn’t work.
