Taking place in a land where magic has been eradicated, WitchSpring R is a remastered version of WitchSpring 1, a well-loved, story-driven role playing game where players can train and accompany a young witch on her magical adventure. This article covers pets up until the “To Aimhard Temple” Quest in Chapter 3: Bondage and Freedom.
Throughout the early and mid-game, the young witch encounters a variety of pets that can join and aid her on her journey by casting Mind Control on them while they are below 30% HP. Each pet in WitchSpring R has their own unique strengths, varying from defensive and utility-based to offensive and damage-based abilities. While each critter can provide plenty of uses, a handful stand out among the others for their superior talents, and exceptional abilities that provide greater help to the young witch on her adventure.
7 Boar Junior
A friend that becomes a pet, Boar Junior is Pieberry’s first companion in WitchSpring R, and functions as an amazing, starter battle-companion for players levelling Pieberry’s STR and AGI. Pieberry teams up with the adorable critter after finding it dangling from the air in the clutches of a mysterious, black bird.
Boar Junior’s primary Skill, Boar Charge, deals 20 ATK + 100% of Pieberry’s STR and 200% of her AGI. It’s secondary Skill, Valorous Charge, deals 50 + 250% of STR and 200% of AGI. Additionally, as a ridable mount, Boar Junior unlocks a new area for Pieberry to explore.
6 Seed Spirit
Located in the spring behind Pieberry’s house, the Seed Spirit can prove to be a rather prickly enemy for an under trained Pieberry. Still, if the player manages to beat and Mind Control the Seed Spirit, the forest fairy becomes a very useful ally in the early game for players levelling Pieberry’s MAG.
Spellcasting-focused Pieberry’s should look to recruit the Seed Spirit as soon as possible. Scaling with MAG, the Seed Spirit deals 30 + 100% of MAG with its primary Skill, Elemental Seed, and 50 + 100% of MAG with its secondary Skill, Bloom. On top of this, with each cast of Elemental Seed, the Seed Spirit restores a small portion of Pieberry’s MP. To earn high affinity, players will need to craft and feed the Seed Spirit some Dwarf Golem Essence.
5 Carico
Carico resides within the Lalaque Mine Entrance, nestled amongst Tainted Caricos. While its powerful primary skill, Electrocute, can be difficult to deal with, dealing almost 100 damage per turn, players can cast their Magic Shield Special Skill to help protect them while they whittle it down with the help of their current pet.
As a rideable pet, Carico travels at 128% of Pieberry’s SPD, like Boar Junior, but serves as a much stronger battle companion. The player can boost Carico’s affinity by feeding it Sparkors which unlock its second ability, Lightning Ball. Lightning Ball an AoE skill that deals a huge 100 base damage + 200% of Pieberry’s MAG. Unlike some other pets’ Secondary Skills, Lightning Ball activates after 1 turn during combat, and can be used every other turn.
4 Caric
A fully matured Carico, Caric is a much more powerful version of the previous entry. Players looking to retrieve Caric can find it in the Lalaque Mine Cave to the left of the Lalaque Mine Ore Storehouse. Starting with the primary Skill, Lightning Ball, which does 200 + 200% of Pieberry’s MAG, Caric becomes an essential companion capable of taking down strong opponents like Angry Bull.
After feeding Caric Sparkors, the creature will unlock its secondary Skill, Tail Sting. Tail Sting deals 300 + 280% of Pieberry’s MAG in damage, with the number of shots increasing each turn. Like Carico, Caric is a rideable pet and travels at 133% of Pieberry’s SPD.
3 Backpack Spider
A gift to Pieberry from Kanna, the Backpack Spider is one of the two options Pieberry can choose from. The adorable robot makes a brilliant companion, and its powerful missile attacks deal damage scaling with either Pieberry’s MAG or STR. To boost the Backpack Spiders affinity, players can feed it High Elasticity Springs, dropped by mobs within the Lalaque Mine Entrance.
Upon reaching this point in the game, it’s unlikely players will have a better option for a battle pet than the Backpack Spider. Furthermore, both the Backpack Spider’s primary and secondary skills can target multiple opponents, making the robot a fantastic choice while facing off against larger groups of enemies.
2 Aslan
Encountered throughout the story as the Guardian Animal of the Arua Temple, Aslan is a majestic, powerful and impressive lion that wields the power of lightning. As a rideable pet, Aslan moves at 142% Pieberry’s Base SPD, and deals significantly more damage than any of the other pets obtained before this point in the game.
Joining Pieberry with max Affinity, Aslan has two solid Skills for combat. The lion’s primary ability, Burning Claw, deals 70 + 200% of Pieberry’s MAG, as well as 50% of Pieberry’s STR, to a chosen target. Then, after 3 turn rotations, Aslan’s insane secondary Skill, Aslan’s Lightning Bolt, comes into play. After charging for 1 turn, Aslan unleashes a massive AoE lightning strike dealing 900 + 540% of Pieberry’s MAG to enemies.
1 Brillion
Found within the Lions Plain, Brillion is a Dark Lion overcome by Dark Magic in an ongoing fight to retain control over itself. Pieberry can choose to fight Brillion, attempting to help the beast with her Mind Control, and stop the darkness from fully taking over. After successfully Mind Controlling the dark lion, Pieberry can ride Brillion, who moves at 152% of the young witches base SPD.
In battle, Brillion’s Black Claw Skill deals a powerful 400 + 100% of MAG and 300% of Pieberry’s STR. After raising Brillion’s affinity by feeding it Dark Magic Stones, its secondary Skill, Black Roar, unlocks. With a base ATK of 700, in addition to 100% of MAG and 400% of STR. Dark, imposing and beautiful; Brillion is a fantastic beast that aids Pieberry through many tough battles.
