In its weekly blog post, Bungie reveals that the Thorn exotic hand cannon is getting a catalyst in Destiny 2 Season 23 and confirms the boost the weapon will be getting because of it. Exotic weapons are some of the most sought after gear in Destiny 2, offering players a wide variety of interesting ways to dispatch enemies. In addition to looking unique from other weapons in the game, exotics often have interesting traits like Ex Diris which was added inside of Season of the Witch and enrages when dealing or taking sustained damage, offering players increased rate of fire while also spawning an enemy seeking and explosive moth.
While there are many exotic weapons that have become fan favorites, many have seen an even bigger boost in power and functionality thanks to a catalyst. Typically earned by completing a certain task or through RNG, catalysts can be equipped to offer a boost to stats and on many occasions, new functionality like Trinity Ghoul, which allows the exotic trait to proc on body shots instead of requiring precision final blows. New exotic catalysts are constantly being added and Bungie has confirmed which weapon is getting a boost when Season 23 rolls around.
In the latest weekly blog post from Bungie, it was revealed that the hand cannon Thorn would finally be getting a catalyst. While Bungie didn’t reveal how the catalyst could be earned, many speculated it may follow a similar trend in that it can be randomly acquired by finishing Destiny 2 ritual activities like the Crucible, Gambit, or Vanguard strikes. However, the catalyst boost was shown to grant a bonus to range and stability. In addition, earning a final blow or picking up a Remnant further boosts the weapon range, handling, and mobility as well. The boost in range will likely make this damage over time machine even more deadly.
Thorn is an iconic exotic weapon inside the Destiny franchise, originally acquired through a Rise of Iron mission called A Light in the Dark. The weapon then made the jump to Destiny 2 in 2019 during the Joker’s Wild Annual Pass content, now known as Season of the Drifter. As one of the Weapons of Sorrow alongside Necrochasm, Osteo Striga, and Touch of Malice, Thorn is a weapon that excels in damaging the target over time and leaving behind a Remnant which the player can pick up to strengthen the weapon while also partially refilling the magazine.
Thorn follows in the footsteps of Monte Carlo, which just received its own catalyst during Season of the Witch. With a massive blade on the front, this auto rifle rewards melee kills which grant stacks of increased damage and ammo through its exotic perk called Markov Chain. With the catalyst equipped, Monte Carlo can fully utilize its bayonet at 5 stacks of Markov Chain and simply hitting an enemy with it will help refill melee energy.
Destiny 2 is currently available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
