Overwatch 2 fans are disappointed in the lack of customization options for Onryo Hanzo, the new Mythic skin from Season 7: Rise of Darkness. Though many players think the skin is cool, the fact it has almost half as many ways to personalize it has left many Overwatch 2 fans feeling cheated.
Mythic skins are a new type of cosmetic introduced with the seasonal content of Overwatch 2. Each season has added one new Mythic skin, featuring unique voicelines and effects, and has several ways it can be customized. These options range from different faces and weapons to different outfits and color schemes.
However, Season 7’s Mythic skin has broken this trend, leaving many players wanting. Unlike its predecessors, Onryo Hanzo only has five different customization options. Players can choose between two different bows and three different skin colors, but have no options to change the actual model or outfit as they have in previous seasons. With other Mythic skins having between 8 and 11 options, Onryo Hanzo’s customizations are severely lacking in comparison.
On his personal Twitter, Overwatch 2 executive producer Jared Neuss responded to the criticism Onryo Hanzo has attracted from fans. He said every skin has different priorities, with some focusing on different models while others lean heavier into VFX. According to Neuss, Onryo Hanzo is the latter camp, featuring unique voice lines, ability effects, and voice modulation. He also claimed the reduced number of customization options was not necessarily a precedent for future Mythic skins in Overwatch 2.
Nevertheless, many Overwatch 2 fans are not convinced. While the effects used for Onryo Hanzo’s ultimate and other abilities are unique and stylish, players pointed out that many other skins, such as Cyber Demon Genji and Amaterasu Kiriko also have special VFX. These fans wonder if the devs ran out of time to complete the skin and think it should rethink committing to a Mythic skin every season if Overwatch 2 can’t deliver equivalent options for each one.
Unfortunately, Onryo Hanzo isn’t the only Overwatch 2 skin catching criticism from fans right now. Season 7 introduced a bevy of Diablo 4 skins for Overwatch 2, but many of the most sought-after cosmetics are locked behind a $40 bundle. That said, Season 7 introduced several good things to the game too, including a new map and a frightfully thematic Battle Pass, so at least Overwatch 2 has gotten some wins to balance out these losses.
