A Starfield player has shared a clip highlighting how Bethesda missed the chance to show ship travels without cutscenes. Starfield is a game strongly driven by the word “exploration,” with the player taking on the role of a space explorer while able to travel to a variety of galaxies and planets.
Ships are crucial to Starfield because as well as working as a weapon in space combat, ships are the main form of transportation. What’s more, ships have become a trend among Starfield players thanks to the game’s customization system as players have been reproducing various ships from pop culture, including Alien, Batman, and Star Wars. Some players have come up with original ideas, creating Starfield ships that look like hamburgers, scorpions, and capybaras. But while the Starfield ships add richness and immersion to the game, one player noticed a detail that could make the experience even more fun.
Reddit user Xbox_Live_User shared a clip showing the view from inside the Va Ruun Hymm ship as it leaves a planet, but at one point the game interrupts the travel with a loading screen. The clip is 18 seconds long, and while one of Starfield‘s missions is updated, the ship with the player quickly leaves a desert area. When it reaches a certain point, the travel is cut short, and what they see next is the ship already in outer space, with a beautiful view of the stars. Starfield players can cross distances using fast travel, but the community has already created ways to turn Starfield‘s space travel more immersive without too much work.
One of the comments on Xbox_Live_User’s post asks why Bethesda didn’t use more cutscenes when ships take off and land. In response, a player explains that the Creation Engine used to develop Starfield is sometimes unreliable. They go on to explain that in this case, a physics bug could expel the player out of the ship during take-off, causing even more headaches. The player finishes their comment by explaining that while using loading screens makes Starfield‘s ship travels a little less fun, this is the safest option to avoid performance problems.
While Starfield doesn’t allow the player to see the entirety of space travel, Bethesda’s RPG community is already changing this game element. A Starfield mod makes huge upgrade to space travel in a simple but significant way and allows players to travel between systems without much problem. With a community that has shown great creativity since the beginning, it will come as no surprise if Starfield players create other mods in the future to further improve the space travel experience.
